Villa Hakasalmi is beside Töölönlahti bay, near Finlandia Hall, the Music Centre, and Oodi. The Empire-style building is the oldest branch of Helsinki City Museum, and its best-known resident was Aurora Karamzin. Changing exhibitions cover Helsinki history, photography, city life, and culture. For families, the visit works best as a calm museum round where adults can choose clear images, rooms, and stories for children to look at.

- Accessibility
- The museum can be used by wheelchair, with an accessible toilet and outdoor and indoor lifts. Staff operate the lift on request, and a wheelchair can be borrowed at the museum. Service Map accessibility details still mention an uneven route, a steep slope, steps, thresholds, and lifts that require staff assistance, so confirm lift availability in advance if step-free access is essential.
Plan your visit
- Practical notes
- The information desk, coat racks, toilets, and museum shop are on the first floor. Free lockable lockers are available on the first floor, and Kahvila Rakastan operates in the courtyard. Villa Hakasalmi sometimes has events that limit access to parts of the exhibition.
- Opening-hours notes
- The official page lists opening hours as Tue 11:00-19:00, Wed-Sun 11:00-17:00, and Mon closed. The current Stefan Bremer - Helsinki by Night exhibition runs 24.10.2025-30.8.2026; check exceptional opening hours and exhibition-change closures before going.
- Booking notes
- Booking is not needed for a normal museum visit. Guided tours, school and daycare visits, and venue bookings are handled separately following Helsinki City Museum's instructions.
- Price notes
- Adult admission is EUR 17 and reduced admission is EUR 11. Under-18s and Museum Card holders enter free of charge. The last Friday of each month from 11:00 to 17:00 is an admission-free day.
- Age notes
- Best for children and young people around 7-15 who can look at photographs, the old villa, and city history with an adult. With younger children, keep the visit short and focus on clear images, the building, and a small cafe break.
- Seasonal notes
- The museum operates year-round according to its exhibition seasons. There may be closure periods between exhibitions, so check the current exhibition and opening status before visiting.
- Weather notes
- A good rainy-day and cold-day option because the museum visit is indoors. In severe cold, the outdoor accessibility lift may not be in use.
