Karakallio nature trail introduces visitors to notable nature sites in Rastaalanmetsä forest, including the Karakallio herb-rich forest with hazel. The route was created in cooperation with Rastaalan koulu school, and QR codes on the information boards let families explore texts, pictures, and soundscapes made by pupils. The short route works especially well for families who want a school-age-friendly local forest outing without a long hike.

- Accessibility
- According to Espoo, the route is easy but not wheelchair accessible. Part of the trail follows an easy pedestrian path, but the full nature trail is not suitable as an accessible route. With a stroller, choose only the easy outdoor-path sections rather than the full nature trail.
Plan your visit
- Practical notes
- The trail starts at Rastaalantie 6. You can also reach it from outdoor routes starting at Rastaalantie or Karakalliontie. The route is marked in the terrain with yellow paint marks. The nearest bus stops are Rastasmäki and Karakallionkuja. Bring a phone if you want to use the QR content.
- Opening-hours notes
- The nature trail has no set opening hours. City of Espoo nature trails are not maintained in winter and do not have waste management. Open fires and camping are not allowed on nature trails.
- Booking notes
- A self-guided visit does not require booking.
- Price notes
- Walking the nature trail is free.
- Age notes
- Works best for children around 5-12 who may enjoy the QR tasks, pupil-made content, and local forest nature sites. Because the route is short, it can also work with younger children if adults choose the easy sections.
- Seasonal notes
- The route changes with the seasons and pupils' interests. It is best during snow-free times because the route is not maintained in winter and forest sections can be slippery.
- Weather notes
- Best in dry weather. In rain, forest paths, roots, and wet sections can be slippery, even though part of the route follows an easy outdoor path.
