Kirpilä Art Collection is a private-home museum in the former home of doctor and art collector Juhani Kirpilä on Pohjoinen Hesperiankatu. The approximately 350 m2 home on the 6th floor contains hundreds of paintings and sculptures and the atmosphere of a 1900s Helsinki collector's home. For families, it works best as a short and calm art round: choose a few works, look for themes such as animals in the collection, and talk about what it would be like to live surrounded by art.

- Accessibility
- The official accessibility page says Kirpilä Art Collection is not an accessible space. There are 5 steps at the front door, and the wheelchair route uses the gateway and back door with staff help. The lift is old and narrow, there is a threshold at the museum door, rugs are used in several rooms, and there is no accessible toilet. If you need a stroller, wheelchair, or another mobility aid, check the visit with the museum in advance.
Plan your visit
- Practical notes
- The museum is on the top floor of a residential apartment building, and the visit is mainly about looking. With children, agree in advance not to touch artworks, furniture, or objects, and keep the round short. Shoes are removed or covered, backpacks are left in the entrance or office, and larger child groups are recommended to bring more than one adult.
- Opening-hours notes
- Kirpilä Art Collection is open Wednesdays 14:00-18:00 and Sundays 12:00-16:00. The museum is closed on 1.1., 30.4.-1.5., 23.-25.12., and 31.12. An official 3.6.2026 news item says the museum is open normally through the summer, but renovation begins in mid-August 2026 and will close the museum for a few months.
- Booking notes
- No advance booking is listed for a normal public visit. Groups and school groups book with the museum in advance. A school tour lasts about 45 minutes, the maximum group size is about 15 children, and a late uncancelled cancellation or no-show may incur a fee.
- Price notes
- Admission is free during public opening hours. Free public guided tours are offered on Wednesdays at 14:30 and Sundays at 12:30. Pre-booked group tours are paid, but Finnish plain-language tours for school and student groups are free on weekdays from 9-16.
- Age notes
- Best for children and young people around 7-15 who can move calmly in a small home museum and look at art with an adult. The destination can be difficult for younger children because the official information highlights calm group visits, a small entrance area, no touching, and the space limits of an apartment home.
- Seasonal notes
- The museum is normally a year-round indoor destination, but public opening is limited to two days a week. Check the renovation timetable before going, because renovation beginning in mid-August 2026 will close the museum for a few months.
- Weather notes
- This indoor destination works in rain, cold, and windy weather as long as the limited opening hours, apartment-building route, and possible renovation closure fit the family's schedule.
