The Burgher's House Museum is a small historic home museum on Kristianinkatu. Behind the yellow gate is the oldest wooden house still standing in its original place in Helsinki's inner city, furnished as the home of fire station officer Alexander Wickholm's family. Families can explore the rooms, hall, kitchen, old furniture, and objects, and imagine middle-class everyday life in Kruununhaka in the 1860s and 1870s.

- Accessibility
- The museum is not accessible by wheelchair, and there is no accessible toilet, lift, or accessible parking. Service Map details describe a rough route with a steep slope and a long steep ramp without an intermediate landing, plus one step at the entrance, thresholds over 2 cm, and a cramped foyer. The old house is also difficult with strollers.
Plan your visit
- Practical notes
- The museum is small, and the rooms have the tight spaces, uneven features, and thresholds of an old wooden house. The visit works best as a calm short round where adults choose a few clear details for children: the yellow gate, courtyard, kitchen objects, old furniture, and fireplaces. Small events and concerts may also be held in the courtyard during the summer season.
- Opening-hours notes
- The official page lists the summer season as 2.5.-27.9.2026 and opening hours as Wed-Sun 11:00-17:00. The museum is closed during the winter season. 2026 exceptions include Ascension Day 14.5. open 11:00-17:00, Midsummer Eve 19.6. closed, Midsummer Day 20.6. closed, and Midsummer Sunday 21.6. open 11:00-17:00.
- Booking notes
- Booking is not needed for a normal self-guided museum visit. Guided tours and visits for schools and day-care centres are booked separately following Helsinki City Museum's instructions. Study visits for day-care centres and educational institutions are free of charge.
- Price notes
- Always free entry.
- Age notes
- Best for children around 5-12 who can look at small rooms and talk with an adult about old objects, home life, and the work of the fire station officer who cared for the city's firefighting equipment. With younger children, keep the visit short because the museum is not a play space.
- Seasonal notes
- The Burgher's House Museum is seasonal. In 2026 the regular museum season is 2.5.-27.9.; any Christmas-season openings and events should be checked separately closer to the end of the year.
- Weather notes
- The museum round is indoors and can work on a rainy day during the summer season, but access goes through the courtyard and an uneven outdoor route. In cold or very hot weather, the small old building may feel less comfortable.
