Suomenlinna is a sea fortress and UNESCO site reached year-round by HSL ferry. For families, the clearest self-guided visit is to walk the Blue Route from the main pier towards King's Gate, passing ramparts, tunnels, sea views, and the fortress's key sights. The route is about 1.5 kilometres one way and takes about 30-45 minutes to walk in one direction.

- Accessibility
- Suomenlinna can be challenging with prams and mobility aids: routes include stone, gravel, sand, elevation changes, and lateral slopes. A slightly easier route runs parallel to the Blue Route, and accessible toilets are available, including by the ferry waiting area.
Plan your visit
- Practical notes
- Move carefully on ramparts and in tunnels. A flashlight helps if you want to explore darker tunnels with children. Dogs must be kept on a leash and are not allowed in children's playgrounds or on the beach.
- Opening-hours notes
- The island is reached by HSL ferry year-round. The visitor centre source shows service daily 10:00-16:00, but the outdoor area does not have normal indoor-style opening hours.
- Booking notes
- A self-guided walk does not require booking. Guided tours, museums, and group services follow their own rules.
- Price notes
- Walking in the fortress area is free. The ferry uses HSL ticket products, and museums, water bus, or separate services may cost extra.
- Age notes
- Best for children who can manage walking. With young children, keep the route short and be careful around ramparts, steps, and water.
- Seasonal notes
- The walking outing works year-round with the HSL ferry connection. In summer the island usually has more services and water-bus traffic, while in winter the visit depends more on outdoor conditions and the HSL ferry timetable.
- Weather notes
- Weather matters a lot: wind, rain, ice, and snow can make routes slippery and cold.
