Uutela is a large and varied nature area in eastern Helsinki, with routes through forest, by the sea, and near nature reserves. The 1.4 km herp trail in Särkkäniemi is especially interesting for families, with information about reptiles and amphibians. Families can combine a short walk with snacks, the kota, or cooking shelters, but the routes are unlit and not maintained in winter.

- Accessibility
- The city page says the outdoor routes can be used on foot or by bike, but the routes are unlit, not maintained in winter, and parts of the terrain can be demanding. There is an Accessible Helsinki outhouse next to the Uutela kota.
Plan your visit
- Practical notes
- The routes are outdoor trails, not a playground. Bring weather-appropriate gear, snacks, and your own firewood or charcoal if using the cooking shelters.
- Opening-hours notes
- The outdoor area does not have ordinary indoor-style opening hours. The routes are unlit and not maintained in winter.
- Booking notes
- A normal self-guided nature visit does not require booking.
- Price notes
- The outdoor recreation area and nature trails are free of charge.
- Age notes
- Best for children who can manage a short nature trail. For toddlers, the outing needs more adult planning.
- Seasonal notes
- The area can be used year-round, but the herp trail and reptile/amphibian theme are most natural in spring, summer, and early autumn.
- Weather notes
- In rain and winter the routes can be slippery or muddy. The kota and cooking shelters do not replace an indoor destination.
